The most famous local landmark which made Kalyazin known for Russians, is the famous bell tower was built in 1800 of the St. Nicholas Cathedral of the former monastery. It was thought that this bell tower could serve as a light house to guide ships. It is the only remnant of the monastery which luckily avoided demolition when the Volga river was damned and a reservoir was made. It surrealistically rises out of the water of the Uglich reservoir right in the middle of the fairway at the distance of approx. 200 m off the bank on the small island, the foundation of the tower was reinforced with a man made island to support the bell tower. Local residents will happily offer you a motorboat ride to the island and around the tower (in fact, they offer their services to every tourist on the bank's viewpoint), if the weather is good enough. This area has always been a famous resort for Russians, but within the last few years, more foreign tourists are starting to discover this area of Russia.
