Hello Vanessa,Firstly thank you for you input and concern renigdarg the welfare of our fisheries in Exmouth. We have had a few responses to the media coverage of the blue marlin that was caught by the crew on Fully Sic.The Exmouth Game Fishing Club is proud to promote tag and release for all our tournaments. We hold 12 tournaments a year and over the past 4 years have tagged 1549 billfish, with all the information from these tags provided to the dept of fisheries in NSW for research purposes. EGFC has won the GFAA top billfish tagging club for the last two years. The EGFC has also been a part of the marlin research program with Stanford University in the USA using satellite tags. In those 4 years we have weighed 9 billfish. Our club hold kids education clinics every school holidays in conjunction with the local school and Shire, as well as RecFishWest the recognised peak recreational fishing body in Western Australia. In this we promote the safe handling of fish, as well as species identification, the safe release of fish and the best way to sustain the fisheries we have in our area. The blue marlin weighed is estimated to be 8yrs old, according to a recognised world authority on billfish, Dr Julian Pepperell. It is not a threatened species. Many people don’t understand that billfish can grow at such a rapid rate. They can grow from the size of a pinhead to 30kg in just one year. A good example of a common species that is slow to grow is bream. Bream can take 30 years to reach the legal size for capture. We stand by our history as a game fishing club that has been running for over 30 years, striving to promote tag and a release and sustainable recreational fishing within our area. The marlin was filleted and went to over 200 people around town. The club encourages anglers to get full use out any fish that is weighed and one of our standing rules is any fish weighed must be in edible condition. Please feel free to contact us at any stage for more information and if you do visit Exmouth we invite you to our clubhouse to see first hand what we offer.regardsDarren RochePresidentExmouth Game Fishing Club Inc
